Tell us a little about your background and how you first got involved in birding: I was born in the town of Valentine in the sandhills of Nebraska. Invasive avian species: novelty or conservation concern?

The current global loss of biodiversity is well beyond the background rate of extinction, and we may be experiencing the sixth great mass extinction in geological history. There are six primary threats causing these declines in biodiversity: habitat loss, disease, overexploitation, pollution, climate change, and invasive species. WSO Board Member Profile: Mary Korkor Development Committee Chair

So tell us a little about your background and how you first got involved in birding? I grew up in Evanston, Ill., the oldest of four kids. It was my Grandmother Mary who first introduced me to birds. "Mama Mary" fed the birds and provided... Read More

Something "BIG" (and green) for WSO in 2016

Since 2010 some of our state's most intrepid bird watchers have shunned the use of fossil fuels for a cleaner pursuit of their hobby.  Green birding is carbon neutral and relies on human-powered transportation, such as walking, biking, or canoeing/kayaking. You gain a deeper appreciation of your local area, you reduce your negative impact on the environment, you are physically active, and... Read More
