Buffalo River State Trail

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L9266534

Habitat: Pine Plantation, Alder Willow Swamp, Bottomland Hardwoods, Open Water.

Best birds: Old Red Pine plantations provide habitat for several species of interest found at their western most range limit in the Driftless Area, like breeding populations of Red-headed Woodpecker, Hermit Thrush, Nashville Warbler, Pine Warbler, and in areas of white spruce plantation, nesting Yellow-rumped Warbler.

The trail parallels the Buffalo River, which is lined with dense alder and Silver Maple. This habitat is great for Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Willow Flycatcher. Seep areas hold American Woodcock throughout the summer.  A nighttime visit in summer should produce Whip-poor-will

Directions: 21 miles SE of Eau Claire/2.4 miles west of Osseo city center via Hwy. 10 and Tracey Valley Road to a parking area where the trail crosses Tracey Valley Road (44.572773, -91.267500). The best birding is west from the parking area.
