Habitats: 707 acres of Marsh and Wet Prairie.

Best Birds: This is a very good site for grassland birds. Most notable are sparrows, including Clay-colored, Vesper, LeConte’s, Nelson’s, and Henslow’s, all reported since 2016. Other, quality grassland and shrubland birds found here include Bell’s Vireo, Bobolink, and Dickcissel. All five of the county’s wren species, including Carolina Wren, have recent reports. Winter birding is good at the site as well, including Short-eared Owl, Northern Shrike, Purple Finch, Lapland Longspur, and Snow Bunting.

Directions: 25 miles S of Madison/1 mile south of Evansville in northeastern Rock County. The area is between State Road 59/213 and County Road M. Access is available from several parking areas. Along Hwy 59/213, on the western edge of the area, there are five, small, gravel parking areas (42.76126, -89.29890 and 42.74517, -89.29901). The parking area on the southeastern corner is on Co. Rd. M, just north of W. Coon Island Road (42.75229, -89.27923). The final parking area is along the eastern edge, at the end of a long, gravel drive off of W. Marsh Road (42.76215, -89.28268). Evansville Wildlife Area does not have a trail system, but is traversed frequently by hunters.
