Habitat: Bottomland Hardwoods, Native and Restored Grassland, and Marsh.
Best Birds: Northern Bobwhite, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Whip-poor-will, Northern Harrier, Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, Short-eared Owl, Yellow-throated Vireo, Sedge Wren, Henslow’s Sparrow, Prothonotary Warbler, and in winter Yellow-rumped Warbler. Just west of the Sugar River on Hopkins Road is a marsh and grassland that is a reliable location for wintering Short-eared Owl.
Directions: Located 15 miles west of Beloit on Beloit-Newark and S. Hopkins Roads in village of Avon. Parking lot and canoe launch are on south side of Beloit-Newark Road on the western edge of Avon and 150 yds east of Sugar River. From the parking lot, bird along Beloit-Newark Road through the floodplain forest. In addition, just west of the Sugar River, turn south onto Hopkins Road. This area, just outside the SWA, has a transition from Bottomland Hardwood forest to Marsh and grassland and is one of the most reliable locations in Rock County for wintering Short-eared Owl.
