Morgan Coulee Prairie SNA

Morgan Coulee Prairie SNA, Pierce County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Native Dry Prairie, Oak Savanna, Oak Forest.

Best Birds: Eastern Kingbird and Field Sparrow nest in the 54 acre prairie which extends for a half-mile along a steep, south-facing bluff in a coulee opening onto the Rush River valley. The prairie is broken up with scattered islands of Bur Oak savanna and at the bluff is a southern dry oak forest where Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Mourning and Yellow Warbler may be found along the forest edge.

Directions: 40 miles SE of Hudson. From Maiden Rock on Hwy 35 travel northwest about 0.6 miles to East Rush River Road/385th Street. Proceed north 3.3 miles along the winding Rush River valley to 200th Avenue (Morgan Road). Go 0.2 miles east on 200th Ave. to reach the southwest corner of the site. Park along the road. The SNA is to the north of the road. There are small signs at the southwest and southeast boundary corners. The surrounding lands are all private property. There are no trails and traversing the steep landscape is not easy but it is rewarding.

Morgan Coulee Prairie State Natural Area - Wisconsin DNR

East River Road follows the east side of the Rush River valley. This route provides many excellent roadside birding opportunities in spring and summer.
