Habitat: Cedar Swamp, Hardwood Swamp, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Alder/Willow/Dogwood Swamp, Sedge Meadow, Northern Hardwood Forest.
Best Birds: This IBA was identified primarily for birds of shrublands and drier woodlands, including Black-billed Cuckoo, Alder Flycatcher, Brown Thrasher and Field Sparrow. Lowland hardwood and conifer forests harbor Northern Saw-Whet Owl, Olive-sided and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Veery, Purple Finch and Pine Siskin. Areas of northern hardwoods are inhabited by Red-shouldered Hawk, Least Flycatcher, and Wood Thrush. A great variety of warbler species have been reported in summer including Golden-winged and Mourning Warbler in the shrublands and open upland forests, Canada Warbler in the lowland forests and Nashville Warbler in the swamps.
Directions: 73 miles NNW of Green Bay. This is a large wetland and forest complex in the southeast corner of the Nicolet National Forest. Access by trail/road to the state natural area is limited to just a few locations. From the town of Mountain to Waupee Lake take County Road W east for 4.5 miles, then east on Riverview Road (FR 2107) 2.4 miles to the point where Riverview turns north; this is the northwest corner of the SNA at which point park (45.20214, -88.35657) and walk the unimproved road south into the SNA for about 0.5 mile where Waupee Lake lies a short distance to the east. In the southwest of the SNA there is another unimproved road that provides foot access starting on Bachman Road/FR2107, (45.15774, -88.35830). This path cuts across the SNA for one mile to Marigold Lane, (45.16239, -88.34089). Just outside the SNA, birding is excellent all along FR2107 to the west. On the east side segments of West Butler Rock Road and Airport Road and Riverview Road run along the boundary of the SNA.
