Habitat: Urban/Residential, Mixed Conifer Forest.

Best birds: These towns along State Highway 32 are well worth a stop in late fall, winter, and early spring to search for winter finches and waxwings. All three towns have houses with bird feeders on back streets that should be checked for Common Redpoll, Pine Siskin, and Purple Finch, and Townsend has a track record for turning up Evening Grosbeak at feeders. Mountain and Lakewood have more crabapple trees, and therefore have better chances for Bohemian Waxwing and Pine Grosbeak. In Mountain, the best area to check for these species is along County Road W and Spring Creek Roads. In Lakewood, along State Highway 32 near the bank tends to be best. However, these two species can be found anywhere crabapples have fruit. For all these species, the best method is to slowly drive the towns with windows down, stopping when a commotion is heard.

Directions: 67 miles SW of Iron Mountain, MI. Each of the three towns are on Highway 32 in northern Oconto County. Mountain is southernmost, Lakewood is in the middle, and Townsend is northernmost.
