Highway 64 Wetlands

Hwy. 64 Wetlands, Oconto County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat: Marsh, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Beaches and Mudflats.

Best birds: This area, formerly part of the Nicolet Muck Farm, was recently restored into wetland. Water in the impoundments is shallow and typically recedes in late summer, creating excellent shorebird habitat. Ducks and geese fill the pools in spring and fall migration. Although the property is public, access is difficult because there is no vehicle access off Highway 64, but the ambitious birder can walk the property. Dickcissel and Brewer’s Blackbird are common at the drier fringes of the property, including along the highway. Many sparrow species can be found in migration, and American Pipit, Lapland Longspur, and finches can be found in late fall and winter, respectively. Look for Short-eared Owl hunting the expansive marsh at dawn or dusk in early spring and late fall.

Directions: 55 miles NNW of Green Bay. Exit US Highway 141 at State Highway 64 and continue 13.5 miles to the west. Observe from the parking area on the north side of State Highway 64.
