Long Lake Conservancy

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L16280666

Habitat: Open Water, Hemlock Hardwood, Mixed Coniferous, Alder and Willow Swamp.

Best Birds: This is a good area to explore for a variety of northern forest birds.

A great variety of warbler species nest in the county and many of them may be found in the Long Lake area including Cape May, Canada, Blackburnian and Magnolia. Broad-winged and Red-shouldered Hawk have been recorded here. Both cuckoos, four species of vireo, Hermit Thrush and Veery are all regularly seen.

Directions: 45 miles northwest of Green Bay. From Keshena use County Road VV to travel about 6 miles east. Turn north on Long Lake Road and in 1.1 miles arrive at the east side boundary of the property. Park on the shoulder of the road. The conservancy property is only on the north side of Long Lake Road.

The Town of Menominee has 8 conservancies in the Legend Lake area that are public lands meant for wildlife and natural habitat preservation. The Long Lake Conservancy is the largest at 229 acres encompassing all of Long Lake. It is also the most accessible. Bird only on the north side of Long Lake Road between the intersections with Red Wing Trail on the east side and Mallard Bay Road on the west side. This conservancy is public land and (unlike most of the county) you can leave the road and bird the property on foot although there are no prescribed trails. Download the map at the link below to make sure you stay on the conservancy and not on adjacent private tribal lands.
