Nelson Dewey State Park

Habitat:  Oak-Hickory Forest, Southern Hardwoods Forest, Native Grassland, Dry Goat Prairie, and Bottomland Hardwoods.

Best Birds:  In this 756 acre site look for Warbling Vireo, Carolina Wren, Orchard Oriole, Blue-winged Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager in the forest habitats, especially along Dewey Creek or in an Oak Grove picnic area. In the bottomland forest look for Pileated Woodpecker, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Prothonotary Warbler.  

In the grasslands at the top of the Mississippi River bluff look for Lark Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, and flyover Turkey Vulture.  Night owling in the creek bottom before going uphill will produce Whip-poor-will, Screech, Barred, and Great Horned Owl.  

Directions: 90 miles S of LaCrosse/1 mile north of Cassville on County Road VV. Park entrance and office is at 42.731530, -91.017022.  Trails through Native Prairie and Forest are available. Check at park office for access to bottomland forest north of the Stonefield Historical Site.
