Habitat: Open Water, Bottomland Hardwoods, Oak-Hickory Forest, Southern Hardwood Forest.
Best Birds: Check the Mississippi River or ducks, White Pelican, herons, and Bald Eagle. Along the roadway on the edge of the bottomland forest and the hillside look for Warbling Vireo and Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher. In the oak-hickory and southern hardwoods along the stream and valley road look for Acadian Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, Kentucky Warbler, and Cerulean Warbler.

The roadway to the dam is a dead-end road. Bird from the Closing Dam Road as it is elevated above the railroad tracks. Traffic is minimal on these roads so park in a safe location on the shoulder and walk along road edge while birding. Except for some Upper Mississippi Refuge property west of the railroad tracks, all other property is in private ownership. Birding from the railroad tracks is dangerous. Freight train traffic involves speeds up to 60 mph. On your return trip south take Good-Nuf Hollow Road inland.
