Habitat: Restored Prairie and Grassland, Oak-Hickory Hardwood Forest, Southern Hardwood Forest, Bottomland Hardwoods, Open Water, Marshland.

Best Birds: In this 2674 acre site look for Bell’s Vireo, Yellow-breasted Chat, Lark Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, and Henslow Sparrow in the grasslands, especially near the park office.  In the forests look for Pileated Woodpecker, Red-headed Woodpecker, Blue-winged Warbler, Hooded Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager.  In and near the pine plantations look for Wood Thrush and Yellow-throated Warbler.  Listen and look for Acadian Flycatcher, Cerulean Warbler and Kentucky Warbler at stops while traveling Long Valley Road. In the bottomlands look for Red-shouldered Hawk, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Prothonotary Warbler, and Northern Parula Warbler near the boat landing.  From the boat landing look for gulls, Great-crested Cormorant, and Great Egret. Louisiana Waterthrush can be found in a small tributary along the roadway to the boat landing.   

Directions:  70 miles S of La Crosse/15 miles south of Prairie du Chien. The park entrance station is off County Road X and C at 42.978427, -91.114046.    The boat landing is at 42.976276, -91.137835. The park has many good trails for hiking and birding.  A visit to the Passenger Pigeon Monument is educational and scenic.
