Habitat: 730 acres of Open Water, Marsh, Native and Restored Grassland, & Cropland.
Best Birds: Goose Pond is a prairie pothole wetland that hosts thousands of ducks, geese (Greater White-fronted Goose, Snow Goose), Tundra Swan, grebes, and shorebirds during spring and fall migration. Eight species of ducks nest at Goose Pond including Gadwall and Ruddy. Sandhill Crane and Marsh Wren are frequently observed in the emergent vegetation. You’re likely to find Ring-necked Pheasant, Northern Harrier, Willow Flycatcher, Sedge Wren, Clay-colored Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark, and Dickcissels and in the restored prairies. During winter the surrounding cropland hosts Snowy Owl, Horned Lark, Lapland Longspur, and Snow Bunting.
Directions: 20 miles N of Madison/1 mile south of Arlington. From Highway 60/51 go south on Goose Pond Road to Prairie Lane 43.31647,-89.3671775 There is a spotting scope, kiosk and Wingspan overlook on Prairie Lane. Twelve miles of mowed trails wind through restored mesic prairie restorations.
