Habitat: The DNR’s middle unit of 195 acres includes Marsh, Open Water, Bottomland Hardwoods, Alder Swamp, Pine Plantation, Oak-Hickory Forest with pines, and Oak Savanna.
Best Birds: In breeding season the Pine Plantation provides habitat for Red-breasted Nuthatch, Veery, and the county's only confirmed breeding Pine Warbler, in the marsh you may find Wilson’s Snipe, American Bittern, Belted Kingfisher, Willow Flycatcher, and Swamp Sparrow. In the wooded areas and pines look for Eastern Wood-Pewee, Tufted Titmouse, and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Many warblers can be found during spring migration including Northern Waterthrush, Golden-winged, Blue-winged, Black-throated Green, and Wilson’s. Barred Owl can often be heard during the day and Great-horned Owl can also be heard at night.
Directions: 30 miles N of Madison. On the south side of Poynette, from the intersection of County Q and CS go west on CS 0.45 miles to a parking lot on the northside of the road (43.380920, -89.414774) . The middle unit includes 2 miles of hiking trails with 3 boardwalks over wetlands.
