Grassy Lake State Wildlife Area

Grassy Lake SWA, Columbia County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot 

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Sedge Meadow, Water, Oak-Hickory Forest, Pine Plantation, and Native and Restored Grassland.

Best Birds: Spring migration begins with waterfowl and ends with warblers and Common Nighthawk. Breeding birds include Trumpeter Swan, Gadwall, Hooded Merganser, Pied-billed Grebe, Common Gallinule, Black Tern, Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfisher, Willow Flycatcher, Marsh Wren, and Swamp Sparrow in the wetlands; Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Clay-colored Sparrow, Field Sparrow, and Dickcissel in the grasslands; and Yellow-billed Cuckoo, American Woodcock, Eastern Screech Owl, Barred Owl, Red-headed Woodpecker, Warbling Vireo, Eastern Towhee, Orchard Oriole, and Scarlet Tanager in the wooded areas. Non-breeding American White Pelican and Great Egret are present in summer.               

Directions: 35 miles NE of Madison. From the intersection of Lincoln Street and County A in Doylestown, go west on Lincoln Street 0.3 miles, then continue on Otsego Road 0.5 miles and turn north of Fur Farm Road for 0.1 miles to a parking lot on the west side of the road (43.425450, -89.161060).  Instead of turning on Fur Farm Road you can keep on Otsego Road for 0.2 miles to view the large wetland from the roadside. There are also two parking lots to the west on Erdman Road. Management trails provide access. There are also 504 acres of Waterfowl Production Areas to the north, northwest, and northwest of Grassy Lake State Wildlife Area.
