Gibraltar Rock SNA, Columbia County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot
Habitat: Southern Hardwood Forest, Cedar Glade, and Successional Oldfield.
Best Birds: The top of Gibraltar Rock is a great location to view soaring Turkey Vulture and other birds of prey. The pine and cedar habitat at the top is also a good location for species like Red-breasted Nuthatch and Pine Warbler in summer. and in winter months look for Townsend’s Solitaire along with a variety of winter finches. The Ice Age Trail, which takes you to the top of the bluff, passes through an old growth hardwood forest and has a great variety of bird species including Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Acadian Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Wood Thrush, Hooded Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager.
Directions: 29 miles N W of Madison. From the junction of Highways 113 and 60 in Lodi, go north on 113 for 4.1 miles, then west on County Highway V 1.1 miles, then south on Gibraltar Rock Road 0.1 mile to a parking area, (43.348642, -89.600311). An old access lane leads to the summit. It can be icy and precarious in winter.There is another parking lot to the west 0.6 miles southwest of the intersection of Highway V and Gibraltar Rock Road (43.34467, -89.61024). There is a 1.5-mile segment of the Ice Age Trail that goes between the parking lots.
