Loon Lake State Wildlife Area

Habitat: Northern Hardwood Forest, Marsh, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Open Water.

Best Birds: The ponds provide suitable resting areas for a large diversity of waterfowl during spring and fall migration. In particular, check for Greater White-fronted Goose, Cackling Goose, and Trumpeter Swan. The shallow ponds also attract Black Tern during the summer months. 

 A walk along the wooded areas - especially Loon Lake Woods SNA - during the summer may add species including Black-billed Cuckoo, Golden-winged Warbler, and Blue-winged Warbler

During the winter months, birders may encounter Ruffed Grouse, Horned Lark, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Snow Bunting

Directions: 73 miles NW of Eau Claire/4 miles southwest of Cumberland.  First Street bisects the area north to south and there is a parking area on First St. 0.9 miles south of 19 ½ Street, 45.47149, -92.13475.
