Habitat: Mudflats, Open water, Cropland.
Best Birds: This location can be a very productive spot when looking for waterfowl, shorebirds, and gulls. Spring is often the most productive season, as the pond water levels are at the highest. Typically first to move through is the waterfowl, possibilities include Greater White-fronted Goose, Cackling Goose, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Bufflehead, and American Black Duck. Slightly later into the season, shorebirds may be encountered including Willet, Stilt Sandpiper, Solitary Sandpiper, and Short-billed Dowitcher. This location is also known to attract large numbers of Bonaparte’s Gull.
During the summer months, visitors may discover species such as Bobolink, and Eastern Meadowlark.
A drive past the area in the winter months may produce roadside species including Snow Bunting and Horned Lark.
DIrections: 63 miles N of Eau Claire/Five miles northeast of Rice Lake on 22nd Street (County M). The pond will be on the east side of the road. Observe from the roadside only.
