Pope Lake State Natural Area

Habitat:  Open Water, Northern Hardwood Forest. 

Best birds: Summer trips should give you Blue-winged Teal, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Ruffed Grouse, Red-shouldered Hawk, Tufted Titmouse, and Wood Thrush and many vireo and warbler species. 

Directions: 28 miles SE of Stevens Point/West of Waupaca take Hwy QQ to Hwy Q to Golke Road. Then turn west onto Knight Lane. The landing is near the end of Knight Ln just west of the bridge (44.32841, -89.19076). Take the creek upstream to visit Manomin, Pope, and Marl Lakes.

Rise in the early morning to paddle three pristine clear marl bottom lakes with few cottages and wooded shorelines. All three lie within or touch on the Pope Lake State Natural Area.

Access to the SNA is also possible via the hiking trail from the Hartman Lake State Park beach parking lot.
