Mukwa SWA, Waupaca County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot
Habitat: Bottomland Hardwoods, Willow and Alder Swamp, Marsh, Open Water
Best Birds: This area is good for Northern Harrier, Osprey, Warbling Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Sedge Wren, and Swamp Sparrow.
Directions: 30 miles NE of Appleton/1 mile west of New London. The Mukwa Marshland Walk cuts into the heart of the Mukwa State Wildlife Area and is a one-mile trek for the intrepid wanderer. Drive west out of New London on Jennings Road about 1.25 miles to the corner where the road turns south. Instead of south, turn north and park in the lot at the foot of the hill, (44.38260, -88.77750). Wear Wellingtons and carry a compass. The path, although faint at times, runs straight north from here. There is also a parking area on County X on the north border of the area.
Mukwa Bottomland Forest State Natural Area lies within the SWA, in the southwestern portion. Access to the SNA is by boat or canoe upstream from a boat landing on the Wolf River, (44.37288, -88.80331). To reach the landing from New London, go southwest on County W 0.75 mile, then west on Dey Road 1.5 miles to the river.
