Marion City Park Trails

Habitat: Alder Swamp, Bottomland Hardwoods, Pine Plantation, Open Water. 

Best Birds: From the softball field to the wayside in Spring, warblers may include Bay-breasted, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Canada, Cape May, Chestnut-sided, Golden-winged, Magnolia, Mourning, Nashville and Northern Parula. Vireos include Blue-headed, Yellow-throated and Philadelphia. Pine Warbler and Yellow-rumped Warbler are frequently seen or heard in the summer months. 

In Winter, Red breasted Nuthatch, Pine Siskin, and Red Crossbill can be found in the pines and Bohemian Waxwing along the river eating the Buckthorn berries. Waterfowl and kingfishers may winter in the open water below the dam.

Directions: 52 miles SE of Wausau, in the city of Marion. From Highway 45, go south on Highway 110 or Main St. 1/2 mile to just past the high school. Turn left on Parkview Ave and go 2 blocks to Bartelt Field. Turn left and go about 100 yards and park. Walk the trail down the hill to a small softball field below the high school and along the Pigeon River. 

Site Address & Additional Information: 

From Marion High school, the Pigeon River runs through the property. The trail begins at the softball field below the high school and continues mostly in an easterly direction to the wayside along Highway 45, going through alders, bottomlands and planted pines. Another portion of the trail goes past the city water treatment plant.
