Best Birds:  Abundant water provides winter refuge for Wood Duck, Gadwall, Hooded Merganser, Wilson’s Snipe, Great Blue Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Winter Wren, and Hermit Thrush and Song Sparrow.  It is a good place to check for a rare overwintering Yellow-bellied Sapsucker or Rusty Blackbird.

Nearly every Spring, the area by the dam and waterfall attracts Louisiana Waterthrush

Summer breeders include Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, Warbling Vireo, Wood Thrush, Henslow’s Sparrow, Bobolink, Cerulean and Hooded WarblerDickcissel are present in irruption years.

Directions:  From the intersection of Hwy 67 and Hwy 59 in Eagle, drive west along Hwy 59 to Hwy N.  At Hwy N, turn right and drive north to the paved Paradise Springs parking lot on the east side of the road.  The Gotten Cabin and associated prairie habitat is located on the west side of the road.

From the parking lot, walk the asphalt path that leads to the dam, pond, and spring house.  In the winter, when the ground along the riverbank is firm, you can safely transit the length of the creek from the dam back to the property entrance.   From the north side of the Gotten Cabin, there is a footpath to the prairie area.
