McMahon Rd wetland, Waukesha County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitats: Open Water, Mudflats, Marsh, Sedge Meadow, Successional Oldfield, and Cropland.

Best Birds: At the Pennsylvania Street wetlands scan the pond and wetlands for waterfowl, herons, rails, grebes and shorebirds, as well as Marsh Wren, and Swamp Sparrow. Also check the trees planted along the roadside for migrating warblers and other species. Along Pennsylvania Road check the fields for Horned Lark in winter and Eastern Meadowlark in spring and summer.

In wet years at the McMahon Road wetlands the small lake to the north can harbor herons and in migration a variety of ducks and shorebirds if mudflats are exposed. Also check the south side of the road for shorebirds and Willow Flycatcher.

Directions: 40 miles NW of Milwaukee. This area is often included in the Rock River Ramble though more associated with the tributary Ashippun River. Evergreen Road is the county line road between Dodge and Waukesha counties. From Evergreen Rd go south on Pennsylvania for 0.3 miles. At the curve in the road, pull over onto the wide shoulder on the west side of the road to view the marsh, (43.19032, -88.51925).

Continue south on Pennsylvania St, crossing Hwy CW (Mapleton Rd) and on to McMahon Rd. Turn east on McMahon Rd and drive 0.5 miles to the parking lot just west of Hwy 67, (43.16552, -88.50471).

On the near east side of Hwy 67 check out the Ashippun River Greenway, a Waukesha Co. public hunting grounds, (43.16540, -88.50138).
