Habitat: Marsh, Sedge Meadow, Willow, Alder or Dogwood Swamp, Open Water, Oak-hickory Woods, Bottomland Hardwoods.

Best Birds: Hooded Merganser and other migrating ducks and geese, Wild TurkeyVirginia Rail, Sandhill Crane, Black-crowned Night Heron, Cooper’s Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Willow Flycatcher, Tufted Titmouse, Northern Shrike (winter), Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Marsh Wren, Brown ThrasherWood Thrush, Veery, Swamp Sparrow, and Scarlet Tanager.  At Cottonwood Wayside there is a tall chimney structure erected for migrating Chimney Swift.

Directions: 28 miles WNW of Milwaukee. The marsh is located about 3 miles north of I-94 and about 1 mile south of Hwy 16. From either direction take Hwy 83 to W North Shore Drive and continue about 0.75 miles northeast to Cottonwood Drive. Continue for 0.5 mile to the Cottonwood Wayside. Follow the trail west through the open oak-hickory woods to the boardwalk which circles through a portion of the marsh (about one mile). The Hartland Marsh Segment of the Ice Age Trail continues on the east side of Cottonwood Ave.  It can be accessed by crossing the road and following the trail north-east to the Maple Wayside where there is a small parking lot. The trail passes through oak-hickory woods and oak savannas, with scattered stands of aspen. The marsh portion features a couple of sturdy bridges with benches. A short spur trail leads to an overlook of the marsh.
