Turtle Valley State Wildlife Area

Habitat: This 1900 acre wildlife area consists of Open Water, Marsh, Mudflats, Native and Restored Grassland, and Sedge Meadow.

Best Birds: Walworth County’s “Little Horicon” is a good spot to observe migrant waterfowl and shorebirds, along with breeding Black Tern and Wilson’s Phalarope.  Other species of note include Alder and Willow Flycatcher, Grasshopper and Henslow’s Sparrow, Eastern and Western Meadowlark, Yellow-headed Blackbird and Dickcissel. A sod farm west of CTY P and north of the wildlife area may also host migrating Buff-breasted Sandpiper and Brewer’s Blackbird. Short-eared Owl can also be found in winter.

Directions: 53 miles SW of Milwaukee/5 miles north of Delavan. Turtle Valley stretches from west of CTY P to the east of CTY O and north of Sugar Creek Road. Four small parking areas are on CTY P. Two parking areas may also be found on CTY O. West of CTY P is a 2.5 mile loop trail. Another trail runs between CTY P and CTY O, as well as east of CTY O.
