Upper Mississippi River NWR-Goose Island

Habitat:  Bottomland Hardwoods, Southern Hardwood Forest, Marsh, Open Water

Best Birds: The seasonally flooded forests are one the best places in the county for breeding Prothonotary Warbler, and for Swainson’s Thrush, Rusty Blackbird, and Wilson’s Warbler during migration.  Marsh Wren and Swamp Sparrow breed in the marsh. Tundra Swan and Ruddy Duck are common migrants.

Directions: From La Crosse, take south State Highway 35 to County Road GI.  Turn into the entrance to Goose Island County Park. The canoe trailhead is accessed through the county park to the far south end of Goose Island (43.71532, -91.23109). The walking trail is south of County GI shortly after entering the county park, (43.72670, -91.21465).

Goose Island County Park is in La Crosse County, this account is for the portion of Goose Island in the Upper Mississippi River NWR in Vernon County.  Note - the observation deck has been washed away.
