Upper Mississippi River NWR Stoddard Landing

Habitat: Open Water, Beach and Mudflats, Bottomland Hardwood Forest, Sand Prairie, Northern Hardwood Forest

Best Birds: From the boat launch one can expect Tundra Swan, Horned Grebe, Black Tern, American White Pelican, Great Egret,  and abundant waterfowl.  Check the cell tower for nesting Osprey.  The Sand Prairie has held Bell’s Vireo and Orchard Oriole.  The forests host songbirds including migrant wood warblers.

Directions:  10 Miles S of LaCrosse on State Highway 35. In Stoddard go west on Center St. across the tracks, turn south on Pearl to Elm and follow to the landing (43.657375, -91.224905).  For the Sand Prairie and Northern Hardwood Forest take Elm east to Prairie and follow it south about .5 miles.  Look for a one car pull-off on the east side and walk the trail between the road and slough (43.647682, -91.224449).
