Upper Mississippi River NWR Shady Maple Overlook

Habitat: Marsh, Mudflats, Open Water.

Best Birds: Migratory waterfowl like Tundra Swan, Northern Pintail, Canvasback, Ruddy Duck, Hooded Merganser, and American White Pelican can be found here, as well as Forster’s Tern and Great Egret

Water depth increases from north to south with diverse dabbling ducks to the north and diving ducks to the south.  This area is closed to hunting in fall and has a US Fish and Wildlife biologist on duty during autumn weekends.

Directions:  5 miles S of LaCrosse. Shady Maple is a parking pull-off and parking area on State Highway 35 about 2 miles south of County K.  There are 3 more pull-offs on 35 to the south toward Stoddard. A spotting scope is most helpful. Warning: Traffic on Hwy 35 is brisk!
