Kickapoo Valley Reserve

Habitat: 8,600 acres of Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Bottomland Hardwood Forest, Pine Plantation, Native and Restored Grassland, Successional  Oldfields, Marsh, Sedge Meadow, Willow Alder Dogwood Swamp, Open Water and Cropland.

Best Birds: The Northern Hardwood Forest provides habitat for Acadian Flycatcher, Wood Thrush, Kentucky Warbler, and Cerulean Warbler

The Silver Maple-dominated bottomlands can hold Prothonotary Warbler

Louisiana Waterthrush and occasional Winter Wren breed along the Kickapoo River and the numerous small perennial feeder creeks. 

Look for Bell’s Vireo, Henslow’s Sparrow, and Bobolink in the grassland and edges.

Tufted Titmouse, Purple Finch, and American Tree Sparrow, a variety of woodpeckers and occasional raptor may be found at the Visitor Center bird feeding station in winter.

A wildlife viewing blind is located on the marsh just northwest of Bridge 18 on the Old Hwy 131 trail.  Map and bird checklist are available at the Visitor Center.

Directions:  40 miles SE of La Crosse. The Visitor Center (43.595887, -90.625594) is a mile north of La Farge on State Highway 131.  Miles of multi-use trails provide access by foot, bike, horse, ski, or canoe.  A trail pass is required for parking, camping and use of the canoe landings.
