Medford City Park, Millpond and Riverwalk

Habitat: Northern Hardwood Forest, Alder Swamp, Open Water, Urban Park.

Best Birds: The Millpond and the river are good places to look for waterfowl, especially during migration. Migrants may include Cackling Goose, Bufflehead, mergansers, grebes, and Common Loon. Bald Eagle are frequently seen. The wooded area on the east side of the river is a great place to look for warblers, vireos, thrushes, and other songbirds including B Scarlet Tanager. Chimney Swift use nearby buildings and can often be seen flying in the area. Cedar Waxwing may be found flycatching along the river and feeding in crabapples on the west side of the Millpond; they are often joined by Bohemian Waxwing during the winter.

Directions:49 miles NW of Wausau. Along the Black River in the City of Medford. There is parking on Centennial Parkway (45.141694, -90.351935) on the west side of the Black River, 0.3 mi. north of State Highway 64. There are several other parking areas along the parkway including one near where the Ice Age Scenic Trail crosses the river via a footbridge (45.14394, -90.35467).

The Riverwalk is an almost two-mile walking loop that runs on both sides of the Black River between State Highway 64 and Allman St. with footbridges crossing the river at Allman St, Highway 64, and about halfway between where the Ice Age Trail crosses. The walk is paved except for a short stretch east of the middle footbridge where there is a boardwalk.
