Kettle Moraine State Forest - Shamrock Lane Wetlands

Kettle Moraine SF--Shamrock Rd. Wetlands, Sheboygan County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

 

Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Sedge Meadow, Alder and Willow Swamp. 

Best Birds: The wetland along Shamrock Lane is used by migratory waterfowl and herons. It is one of a few places in the State Forest to observe migrating shorebirds. In summer there are nesting Hooded Merganser, Black-billed Cuckoo, American Woodcock, Barred Owl, Alder Flycatcher, Sedge WrenVeery, Swamp Sparrow, Blue-winged and Nashville Warbler. Similar species can be found in the Crooked Lake area and at the Butler Lake SNA.

Directions: Twenty miles west of Sheboygan. From County Road U take Woodside Road to Shamrock Road, (43.69796, -88.11486) The wetlands can be viewed from the roadside.  Other nearby wetlands are Crooked Lake and Butler Lake. 

Crooked Lake: The Ice Age National Trail passes west of the boat landing from which the lake can be viewed. The trail skirting the wetlands is about 1 mile long from SS to Division Road. There is parking at the south end a few hundred feet from County Road SS, 43.61844, -88.15805

Butler Lake: There is a parking lot and boat landing off of Butler Lake Road, 43.66341, -88.13653. The Ice Age Trail also borders the lake on the west side following the Parnell Esker through hardwood forest to the south and bordering wetlands to the north of Butler Lake.
