Habitat: Cropland, Non-Native Grassland and Pasture. that are flooded in spring;; pastures with ponds.
Best Birds: When fields are flooded in spring, one can find ducks, Snow, Cackling and Ross’s Goose, Mute and Tundra Swan, Pied-billed Grebe, Green Heron, Sora, Bonaparte’s Gull and American Pipit. This is the best area in Sheboygan County to find migrating shorebirds including Black-bellied and American Golden Plover, White-rumped, Baird’s and Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Whimbrel, and phalaropes.
Look for Least, Alder and Willow Flycatcher; Cliff Swallow; Baltimore and Orchard Oriole, Rusty Blackbird (in migration), and Northern Waterthrush in the large cottonwood trees along the Pigeon River.
During winter look for Lapland Longspur, Horned Larks and Snow Bunting in the ag fields. Summer breeding birds include Vesper and Savannah Sparrow and Dickcissel.
Directions: 11 miles NW of Sheboygan. From I-43, take Exit #128 (Hwy 42) and drive northwest on Hwy 42 to Rangeline Rd. then north on Rangeline Rd to the intersection with MM (43.862874, -87.801291). From this intersection drive one mile in all four directions to view flooded fields. Rangeline Road is frequently flooded in spring between Cty Tk MM and Cty Tk FF to the south, and may be closed.
