Amsterdam Dunes Preservation Area

Amsterdam Dunes, Sheboygan County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

 

Habitat: Southern Hardwood Forest including old growth remnants, Bottomland Hardwoods along Barr Creek, Open Water, Beach, Sedge Meadow, and Cropland.  

Best Birds:  In the interior wooded areas look for Sharp-shinned Hawk, Merlin, Pileated & Red-headed Woodpecker, Blue-headed Vireo, Eastern Bluebird, Veery, Wood, Swainson’s and Hermit Thrush, Pine SiskinClay-colored Sparrow, Pine Warbler, and Northern Waterthrush.

In winter or during migration scan Lake Michigan from the county park at the east end of Amsterdam Road for Tundra Swan, Long-tailed Duck, scoters, loons, grebes, American White Pelican, Glaucous, Great Black-backed and Lesser Black-backed Gull, Caspian, Common and Forster’s Tern. On the beach look for a variety of shorebirds, including Solitary Sandpiper and Willet.

Amsterdam Dunes is bordered on the north by the Cedar Grove Hawk Research Station SNA; while of importance to birds, access to this SNA is restricted to hawk banders.

Directions: 43 miles north of Milwaukee/16 miles S of sheboygan. From I-43, take Exit #113 (Hwy 32, Sauk Trail Rd).  Drive east and then south 1 mile on Sauk Trail Rd to Amsterdam Rd.  On the northeast corner of this intersection there is a parking lot.  To get to the trails, walk 0.2 mi east on Amsterdam where signs indicate trails that go north and south of the road.
