Navarino State Wildlife Area, Pike's Peak Flowage

Habitat: Hardwood Swamp, Sedge Meadow, Open Water.

Best Birds: From the boardwalk one may see Sora and Virginia Rail, American White Pelican, American Bittern, Least Flycatcher, Sedge Wren, and Swamp Sparrow. The trail on the north side provides an elevated vantage point for the best panoramic view of Pike's Peak Flowage.  Along this trail there may be Wilson's Snipe, Black Tern, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Northern Harrier, Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Scarlet Tanager. There is a large Sandhill Crane roosting area on Pike's Peak Flowage. In late summer and fall 5000-10000 cranes come to roost in the evening and leave in the morning. Pike's Peak Flowage is a refuge in the fall, during waterfowl hunting season. 

Directions: 32 miles NW of Green Bay/11 miles east of Clintonville. From Hwy 156 go north on McDonald Road about 1 3/4 miles to a small parking area on the east side of the road (44.65148, -88.54445). A short trail goes to a boardwalk projecting into the marsh. Another 0.2 mile north of this location is another parking lot (44.65444, -88.54430) with access to a trail that goes east around the north side of the flowage. Walk east past a gate for about 0.5 mile to an elevated view of McDonald flowage to the south. A trail to the south across Pike's Peak Flowage is at the 0.9 mile point.
