Winkle Road Swamp

Habitat: Alder Swamp, Cedar Swamp, Mixed Coniferous Forest.

Best Birds: In Summer: Alder Flycatcher, Common Raven, Winter Wren, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Hermit Thrush, White-throated Sparrow, and Northern Waterthrush

In Winter: Black-backed Woodpecker, Common Raven, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Bohemian Waxwing, Purple Finch, Common Redpoll, Pine Siskin, Pine Grosbeak. Along Hwy U to the north along Highway U possible warblers include Nashville, Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Northern Waterthrush, and Mourning. Also check nearby Jung Hemlock-Beach Forest State Natural Area which lies on the south side of Winkle Road east of Hwy U. It is a 180-230 years old remnant of the forest that once covered millions of acres in Wisconsin that contains old-growth Eastern Hemlock, American Beech, and Sugar Maple.

Directions: 48 miles NW of Green Bay/10 miles northwest of Shawano, From Highway 29  go north on Highway U to Winkle Road. Turn west on Winkle Road and go about 1/2 mile to the site and bird from the roadside, (44.81111, -88.78666). The swamp extends northeast across Highway U for about another 2 miles but U is very busy and less safe for roadside birding. The Jung Hemlock-Beach Forest SNA is on Winkle Road 0.3 mile east of Highway U on the south side of the road, (44.81127, -88.77036).
