Lake Chippewa (Chippewa Flowage)

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1231799

Habitat: Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Open Water.

Best Birds: Scanning the water from the boat landings might yield Hooded and Common Merganser, Common Loon, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfisher, Merlin, and Eastern Kingbird.

The wooded areas at the boat landings should be investigated as well for Ruffed Grouse, Broad-winged Hawk, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Yellow-throated Vireo, Veery, Hermit Thrush, Black-and-White, Pine and Black-throated Green Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager.  Walking the road at the dam landing and the trail to the canoe/kayak landing below the dam can be especially productive.

Exploring the flowage by boat is a great way to see many of the species listed above as well as many others.

Directions: 83 miles S of Ashland/17 miles ESE of Hayward. The dam creating the 15,000 acre flowage is located six miles northwest of Winter. Public access to the flowage is limited but boat landings at the dam (45.88947, - 91.08028), County Hwy CC south (45.92494, - 91.19527), and County Hwy CC north  (45.95213, - 91.22988) provide good viewing opportunities of the water. The Mino-giizhigad Trail near the intersection of Conner Land and County CC offers nice water views as well.
