Habitat: Open Water, Marsh, Northern Hardwood Forest.
Best Birds: Small, shallow, and unassuming at first glance, Mud Lake is a surprisingly productive location. Ring-necked Duck, Hooded Merganser, Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia Rail, Sora, Alder Flycatcher, and Swamp Sparrow nest, sometimes joined by Trumpeter Swan and Common Loon. Osprey, Bald Eagle, and Belted Kingfisher forage here.
Colbroth Road south of the lake is good for many forest inhabiting species including Pileated Woodpecker, Least Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Hermit Thrush, Veery, Black-throated Green Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager.
Directions: 63 miles SW of Ashland/5 miles south of Hayward on Colbroth Road (45.95763, -91.51753). Where the road comes closest to the water the lake can be scanned or launch your canoe or kayak here and explore the back waters.
