Habitat: Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Open Water.

Best Birds: Lac Courte Oreilles is a good place to see Common Goldeneye, a rare breeder in Wisconsin. Common Merganser, Common Loon, Osprey, and Bald Eagle also nest here. Belted Kingfisher and Eastern Kingbird frequent the shorelines.  

Birding is possible by walking the roads at/near the landings. Among the many species to be found are Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Blue-headed Vireo, Brown Creeper, Hermit Thrush, White-throated Sparrow, Chestnut-sided, and Pine, Yellow-rumped, and Black-throated Green Warbler.

A trip by boat will produce many of the species listed and others as well as providing closer viewing opportunities of water-related birds.

Directions: 68 miles SW of Ashland/4 miles northeast of Stone Lake. Viewing access is provided by the Lac Courte Oreilles Landing (45.91314, -91.44101), Anchor Bay Landing (45.91356, - 91.39982), and Victory Heights Circle Landing (45.88524, - 91.46408). All offer good views of the water.
