Flambeau River State Forest

Habitat: Hemlock-Hardwood Forest, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Open Water.

Best Birds: A walk down quiet Bass Lake Road off Tower Hill Road is a great way to investigate the forest. Representative species found here include Broad-winged Hawk, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Blue-headed Vireo, Brown Creeper, Hermit Thrush, and Blackburnian, Black-throated Green, and Canada Warbler..

Bald Eagle, Common Loon and Belted Kingfisher are often seen foraging at Bass Lake, a short walk from the end of Bass Lake Road.

Miles of well maintained hiking/biking/ski trails are located at the trailhead just east of the Forest headquarters on Hwy W and provide opportunities to further explore the area. Ruffed Grouse, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Winter Wren, Veery, Purple Finch, White-throated Sparrow, Northern Parula, Nashville and Yellow-rumped Warbler, among many others, are found here.

A float trip down the North Fork Flambeau River can produce Hooded and Common Merganser, Bald Eagle, and Spotted Sandpiper, as well as many of the forest dwelling species.
