https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1267519

Habitat: Bottomland Hardwoods, Native and Restored Grassland, Open Water. The Sauk Prairie Canoe Landing is located on the north shore of the Wisconsin River. When the river is low there are exposed sandbars and mudflats.

Best Birds: In the prairie near the parking lot, nesting Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Orchard Oriole are present, as well as less common species like Northern Bobwhite and Lark Sparrow.

Searching the river bottoms, one may find Red-shouldered Hawk, Tufted Titmouse, and Rusty Blackbird (migration).

Trumpeter Swan, a variety of waterfowl and gulls, Bald Eagle, and American White Pelican, may occur along the Wisconsin River.

With low water levels take extra time to check for shorebirds on the sandbars and mudflats,  including American Avocet, Stilt Sandpiper, White-rumped Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and Red Knot.

In winter Northern Shrike can occasionally be found hunting the prairie, and Golden Eagle have been seen here.

Directions: 26 miles NW of Madison. From the southwest side of Sauk City, take Lueders road (Pasture Rd on some maps) to the south to reach the canoe landing.
