Cassel Road Grasslands

Habitat: Native and Restored Grasslands, Bottomland Hardwoods.

Best Birds: Nesting bird species of the Cassel Road Grasslands include Grasshopper Sparrow, Henslow’s Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Orchard Oriole, Eastern Meadowlark, and Dickcissel.

In the river bottoms to the south of the grasslands Red-shouldered Hawk, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Black-billed Cuckoo, Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Blue-winged Warbler can be expected.  

If visiting this location on a summer night, listen for American Woodcock, Eastern Whip-poor-will,and Barred Owl.

Directions: 7.5 miles southeast of Sauk City on Hwy 60, turn south onto Cassel Road.  Drive 1.3 miles on Cassel Road to the parking area, where the road curves to the west.

Site Address & Additional Information: 

The featured habitat of the Cassel Prairie Unit of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway is the Sand Prairie along the south side of Cassel Road.  Further south of the prairie is a large area of Bottomland Hardwoods, situated along the north shore of the Wisconsin River.  To the north of Cassel Road are a series of Sandstone Bluffs, which overlook the prairie.
