Reclaimed Flambeau Mine Nature Trails

Habitat:  Grassland, Open Water, Marsh, Northern Hardwood Forest. 

Best Birds: The grassland component is best-known for its richness of sparrows, including Savannah, Clay-colored, White-crowned, Henslow’s, Fox, Le Conte’s, Lincoln’s, Field and American Tree Sparrow. Bobolinks nest in the south-central interior. Cliff and Bank Swallow forage throughout the area. Pied-billed Grebe, Sora and Virginia Rail, Marsh and Sedge Wren, and Yellow-headed Blackbird have been reported on the 8.5-acre pond/marsh in the northern part of the project.

Directions: 58 miles NE of Eau Claire. The site is accessed from a parking lot located 1.5 miles south of the city of Ladysmith on Hwy 27.

Site Address & Additional Information:

This 150-acre, former open-pit copper mine site was reclaimed in 1999. Today, it is maintained primarily in tall-grass prairie with two ponds and scattered, small pockets of hardwoods and spruce. A mowed, 5-mile trail system allows easy access into the interior.
