Potato Creek SWA, Rusk County, WI, US - eBird Hotspot

Habitat:  Open Water, Marsh, Northern Hardwood Forest, Mixed Conifer Forest, Grassland, Cedar Swamp. 

Best Birds: Belted Kingfisher is regularly encountered along the creek. Bald Eagle and Osprey frequent the area near the Potato Lake outlet. The cedar swamp along Dzimiela Rd. harbors Winter Wren, Blackburnian, Pine and Yellow-rumped Warbler. Look for American Kestrel and Eastern Meadowlark in the grassland areas.

Directions:  49 miles N of eau Claire/20 miles southwest of Ladysmith. From the corner of County Hwy D, proceed north on Dzimiela Road for 0.5 miles to reach the short road leading to the parking lot, (45.34036, -91.39120). The creek can also be accessed by boat; go west on Rose’s Resort Road to Town Road 48 where there is a landing below the spillway at the Potato Lake outlet, (45.33043, -91.41378).

Potato Creek State Wildlife Area comprises a 1000 acre mosaic of contrasting forested and open grassland, shrub and riparian (creek floodplain) and associated wetland habitats.
