Ash Creek Community Forest

Habitat: Southern Hardwood Forest, Pine Plantations, Restored and Native Prairie

Best Birds: Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Wood Thrush, and Scarlet Tanager, on the wooded hillsides.  Belted Kingfisher, Willow Flycatcher, and Warbling Vireo along the main trail in the valley along Ash Creek. Barred Owl and Acadian Flycatcher and can be found along the wooded ravine trail north of the creek.  

Directions: 63 miles NW of madison/4 miles southwest of Richland Center. On State Highway 80 the main parking area is on the west side, 300 ft south of the Ash Creek bridge. This location has access to the trails south of the creek. Trails north of the creek are most easily reached from the west parking area at the end of Mutch Lane, off County Highway Y, about 3.5 miles southwest of Richland Center. There are 4 miles of primitive trails throughout the property.  

Site Address & Additional Information:

The 354-acre county-owned park has a Class 1 Trout Stream running through it.  The valley land has more recent plantings of mixed hardwood, conifer, and shrub plantings, a few acres of planted prairie, and about 6 acres of open grassy area that is mowed once a year.
