Habitat: Hemlock-Hardwood Forest.
Best birds: A walk through the Grove may provide sightings of Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Blue-headed Vireo, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Brown Creeper, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Hermit Thrush, Winter Wren, Blackburnian Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, and Northern Parula.
Directions: 51 miles S of ironwood, MI/about 18.5 miles east of Fifield. Park at an unmarked wayside on the north side of Hwy 70 just east of Turner Lake Road, (45.889664, -90.052845). A trail leads north into the Memorial Grove. There is also a trail across from a small parking lot on the west side of Turner Lake Road (FR 143) near a WW II Memorial sign.

Situated on an end moraine with many kettle holes is 68 acres of old-growth Hemlock within a forest of Yellow Birch, Sugar Maple, Basswood, White Ash, and Balsam Fir. The shrub and herbaceous layers contain Mountain Maple, Fly Honeysuckle, Beaked Hazelnut, Red Elder, Canada Yew, small Enchanter’s-nightshade, Canada Mayflower, Wild Sarsaparilla, Shining Clubmoss, and Wood Sorrel.
Memorial Grove Hemlocks State Natural Area - Wisconsin DNR
The groove was preserved as a memorial to four Forest Service employees who lost their lives in WW II.
