Schmeeckle Reserve

Habitat: The 280 acre Reserve features Mixed Coniferous and Hardwood Forest, Shrub Swamp, Open Water, and Oak Savanna.

Best Birds: Starting at the visitor center feeders look for woodpeckers, Tufted Titmouse, finches, and sparrows. Walking the upland forest trails from the visitor center to Lake Joanis can provide opportunities to observe Great Crested Flycatcher, vireos, wrens, finches, sparrows, warblers, and Scarlet Tanager. Scan Lake Joanis for waterfowl, swallows, and Common Nighthawk.  The shrub swamp and wooded edges to the east of the lake can yield flycatchers, vireos, Northern Shrike (winter), wrens, blackbirds, and warblers. The Berard Oaks area can produce Black-billed Cuckoo and Pileated Woodpecker

Directions: Schmeeckle Reserve is located on the north side of Stevens Point. The visitor center can be reached by heading east from the roundabout on North Point Dr and turning south into the parking lot after passing Michigan Ave. Street side parking is also available on the north side of Maria Dr just west of Minnesota Ave, Lake Joanis will be visible to the north.
