Paper Mill Trail

https://ebird.org/wi/hotspot/L636526?yr=all&m=&rank=mrec

Habitat: Mixed Coniferous Forest, Bottomland Hardwood Forest, Successional Oldfield, Open Water.

Best Birds: The Paper Mill Trail segment of the Green Circle Trail system runs along the Wisconsin River near the Plover River confluence. Heading down the trail from the confluence is an old pump house surrounded by an open area with diffuse snags. Red-headed Woodpecker is reliable here. Search the nearby scrub for flycatchers, vireos, and warblers. Following the trail upriver through  weedy oldfields where a paper mill once stood may yield flycatchers, vireos, Clay-colored Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Lark Sparrow

Scarlet Tanager may be found in the bottomland hardwoods . Scan the river for waterfowl and raptors. The mixed bottomland forest on the trail between Cedar St W and the Wisconsin River can produce Osprey, Bald Eagle, Great Crested Flycatcher, vireos, thrushes, sparrows, and warblers. Scan the Plover River for waterfowl and herons.

Directions: 3 miles S of Stevens Point, at the confluence of the Plover and Wisconsin Rivers in Whiting. A parking area is located on the north side of the bridge on Whiting Ave just north of the Neenah Paper Mill, 44.484731, -89.567218.

Another parking lot from which to access the Paper Mill Trail is at the west terminus of Cedar St W, 44.486456, -89.557508. From here the trail heads north and turns west after crossing the Plover River.
