Habitat: Northern Hardwood Forest, Mixed Coniferous Forest, Sedge Marsh, Conifer Bog, Shrub Swamp.

Best Birds: Oakwood Rd bisects the north edge of Dewey Bog. Cruising the gravel roads can produce hawks, woodpeckers, Alder Flycatcher, Common Raven, Sedge Wren, Veery, Purple Finch, Clay-colored Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, Black-and-white Warbler, and Nashville Warbler. Continuing east on Oakwood and eventually south on Haymeadow Rd, work the upland forest habitats for Ruffed Grouse, Black-billed Cuckoo, woodpeckers, flycatchers, vireos, Hermit Thrush, Wood Thrush, White-throated Sparrow, Blue-winged Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, and Chestnut-sided Warbler

The interior marsh and bog can be accessed from a trail that traverses the Philippine Islands.  Scan the sedge and open water for Ring-necked Duck, Wilson’s Phalarope, Least Bittern, rails, wrens, and sparrows. The bog can produce northern birds like Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Palm Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warbler. This hike is arduous, but the results can be rewarding.

Directions: Dewey Marsh is located 7 miles north of Stevens Point. Heading south on County X from County DB, turn east onto Oakwood Rd to access the north end of the wildlife area. Continuing to the east end of Oakwood, turn south onto Haymeadow Rd. Several parking areas and rustic trails are located along this stretch of the road. Haymeadow Rd can also be reached by turning north off of Dewey Dr.
