St. Croix National Scenic Riverway—Farmington Bottoms to Standing Cedars

Habitat: Bottomland Hardwoods, Marsh, Alder Swamp, Open Water, Mudflats

Best Birds: Explore the St. Croix River and islands by boat. Paddle upstream from Somerset Landing and watch for Trumpeter Swan, geese, ducks, and in debris along shorelines, Spotted Sandpiper. Explore the Silver Maple covered islands for cuckoos, Bald Eagle, Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Alder Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, and Prothonotary Warbler. Listen and watch the mainland seeps, shoreline wetlands, and bluffs for cuckoos, Wood Thrush, Swamp Sparrow, waterthrushes, and Scarlet Tanager.

Directions: 24 miles N of Hudson/4miles SW of Osceola. Best access is by kayak, canoe, or small boat from one of three access points. Launch at Somerset Landing and head upstream. Launch at Log House Landing in Minnesota, cross the river, enter back channels, and head downstream. Or use Osceola Landing in Shafer Minnesota and go downstream. Two foot trails head down to the river at Standing Cedars – Englewood.
