Habitat: 5,497 acres of Northern Hardwood Forest, Conifer Bog, Marsh, Alder and Dogwood Swamp, Open Water, Open Water.

Best Birds: From the Ice Age Trail lot on County Highway W, hike south through a forest dominated by mature White and Red Oak, Bigtooth Aspen, and young Red and Sugar Maple for Ruffed Grouse, Cooper’s Hawk, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Wood Thrush, Northern Waterthrush, and other woodland species. From another parking lot to the west there is a good view of an Osprey nesting platform. Hike the trail south to Margaret Lake for woodland species and possibly a Cerulean Warbler.

In the northern unit, hike east on the Ice Age Trail from the lot on 60th St to 50th St. Look for Black-billed Cuckoo, American Woodcock, Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, woodpeckers, flycatchers, vireos, Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, and other woodland species. The eastern half of this hike passes through private property and county forest where you should look for Golden-winged Warbler and Mourning Warbler.

Directions: 86 miles S of Superior/8 miles east of Frederic on County Road W.
